Between Care and Burden: The Experiences of Siblings of Individuals with Disabilities Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the experiences of siblings of individuals with disabilities who use AAC. The study was conducted using a qualitative paradigm, focusing on the meanings attributed to relational, emotional, and identity experiences. Four adults participated in semi-structured interviews, and the data were analyzed thematically according to the approach of Braun and Clarke (2006). The results reveal the ambivalent nature of these experiences: sibling relationships are a source of closeness and development, but also emotional overload and limited autonomy. Participants report early adoption of caregiving roles, a sense of invisibility from parents, and responsibility for their siblings' futures. They also emphasize the importance of social support as a protective factor. The findings point to the need to include siblings in educational and therapeutic activities and to develop systemic support for this group.

Ewelina Młynarczyk-Karabin, Academy of Special Education

Dr. Ewelina Młynarczyk-Karabin is an assistant professor at the Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education in Warsaw. She is a special education teacher and psychologist. Her research interests focus on neurodiversity, the functioning of individuals with autism spectrum disorder, psychological assessment, and inclusive education. She is the author and co-author of scientific publications in the fields of special education and developmental psychology.

A fourth-year student of Special Education at Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw; Chair of the TEA Student Research Group (Therapy and Education of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders) at the Maria Grzegorzewska University.
