Abstract

The lute music of John Dowland constitutes a significant part of the Renaissance repertoire performed by contemporary guitarists. This article examines selected aspects of Dowland’s compositional technique as a contextual framework for analytical and interpretative considerations. The study focuses on key issues related to the transcription and performance of Dowland’s lute works, including differences in instrumental range, fingering, voice leading, phrasing, and ornamentation. Particular attention is given to the interpretation of lute tablature notation, with emphasis on its limitations. The article discusses interpretative divergences and controversies concerning rhythmic realization and the performance of polyphony resulting from the inherent ambiguities of the tablature system.
