Sonata in D minor, Op. 9 by Karol Szymanowski. Genesis – reception – compositional technique

Abstract

 

The article synthesizes all information, analyses and comments on ‘Sonata in D minor for vio-lin and piano’, op. 9 by Karol Szymanowski, and offers a thorough study of the musical form and language of the work. The content is divided into 5 paragraphs: 1) Introduction, 2) Genesis, 3) Reception, 4) Compositional technique, 5) ‘Sonata in D minor’ in musicological literature.

 

has been divided into 7 areas: 1. Architecture, 2. The structure of formal elements, 3. Thematic work technique, 4. The tonal plan of the composition 5. Melody characteristics 6. Texture vs harmony and tonality 7. Interinstrumental relations. Analytical considerations have been included in a two-part structure, detailing the specific issues. The analysis of the form as well as technical and ex- pressive devices of the work aims to show the artistic maturity of this youthful work. It is illustrated withfive examples of musical notation. The last section provides an overview of opinions on the ‘Sonata in D minor’ by Szymanowski, expressed in Polish and foreign literature (German, English, French) dedi- cated to the biography and works of the composer.

The issues raised in the article are supported by numerous quotations from monographs by Polish and foreign scholars. The article, crowned with final conclusions, contains an annex listing the Sonata recordings.
