Abstract

In the following thesis the topic of physical education programmes and their implementation in state high schools of Krakow during years 1918–1932. After Poland regained its independence in 1918, physical education in Krakow's high schools was carried out in most cases in a form of gymnastics. It was however not the only form of classes. Aside of it, the adolescents used it initiate organised play on school yards during breaks, hiked and attended ice rinks. The Ministry of Religious Communions and Public Enlightenment (MRCPE) created a program of physical education classes for Lower Gymnasium in 1919 and for Higher Gymnasium in 1922. Despite of the existence of a Ministry's program, the physical education reality was not favourable. The most common form was gymnastics, but the facility and staffing conditions did not allow allow its implementation in all of the schools. In schools with such problems, obligatory organised play, excursions or even shooting classes were organised. It was only from the school year 1925/1926, the official physical education program became mandatory to all of the adolescents attending to high schools. It was led as until that time with Ling's system, but with incorporating of organised play. The new program also included, athletics and other sports to the high school physical education curriculum. The beginning of 1929 brought major changes to the program, the MRCPE introduced 3 hours of physical exercises excluding games and organised play. The state high schools in Krakow adjusted very strictly to these regulations. In all of the school reports, its observance was emphasised. In 1931, MRCPE issued a circular letter advising mid-class physical exercises. It was not properly executed however. Until 1932, there was no information about such activities.
