Abstract

The article discusses the steps undertaken by New Labour to reduce educational inequalities within the area of attainment on the level of compulsory education system (as much as obligatory education) as happened during the party’s government in England 1997–2010 (with the focus on T. Blair’s office). The paper enumerates a number of changes introduced, particularly those referring to financial reforms (which shows New Labour’s focus on dealing with the fight against poverty perceived as one of the major factors influencing the society’s future), and pointing that the group who gained most were children from deprived areas. Furthermore, the article presents the influence of the government’s policy on the changes within education as much as public attitude towards the undertaken steps and some of the problems following.
