Internationalization of higher education as a development strategy of leading universities in Europe and Ukraine

Abstract

The article examines the internationalization of higher education as a priority goal of the edu-
cational space of leading European universities. Long-term plans as development strategies of
universities in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria are analyzed.
For Ukrainian higher education institutions, fulfilling internationalization objectives is a crucial
step toward reform and enhancing the quality of education to match the standards of leading Euro-
pean universities. It has been proven that over the past ten years, leading universities in Ukraine
have also prioritized the development of international relations in their development doctrines.
External and internal forms of internationalization are distinguished. We believe that external
forms include international scientific and technical cooperation, which is regulated by the legisla-
tion of Europe and Ukraine, international and intergovernmental agreements, joint scientific pro-
jects and programs, as well as research using unique experimental equipment; organization and
holding of conferences, publication of joint research results; guest lectures by leading foreign sci-
entists; academic mobility of students, scientists and teachers, etc.
Internal forms are, first of all, the organization and holding of international scientific, educa-
tional, and cultural events, the implementation of global standards, the internationalization of
training courses, the development and implementation of intercultural training programs, and the
development of intercultural communication skills.
The features of the internationalization process are analyzed using the example of one of the
oldest institutions in Ukraine - the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
We summarized the main challenges of implementing international ties in domestic universi-
ties. We identified the main risks of the development of internationalization of Ukrainian higher
education institutions in the period 2022–2025, which is associated with a full-scale invasion.
