Abstract

The Czech violin educationist, Otakar Ševčik, is the author of comprehensive corpora of the pedagogical works. This paper aims to prepare the introductory review of the content of these works, mostly forgotten today, some of which remain just in manuscripts. The goal of the article isan attempt to encompass holistically Ševčik’s pedagogical method, as well as bring closer thesilhouette of this distinguished teacher, who can be considered one of the co-creators of the Polish violin school (as the teacher of Eugenia Umińska and others). The author of the article reflects on the innovation of Ševčik’s work in the context of violin pedagogy tradition. The starting thesis is the constatation of his “total” understanding of the performance craft issues, which consist of technique details (intonation, bowing, articulation, playing in positions, polyphonic playing, etc.) as well as the expression factors.
