Abstract

This article introduces the little-known unpublished work of the last years’ creative life of theoutstanding Polish composer Feliks Nowowiejski. The presentation of this composition is preced- ed by a presentation of the state of the studies made to date on all the piano works of this artist. The characterization of the piano music takes into account its three stages, defined byHermenegilda Ratajczak’s pioneering research, conducted in the 1970s. The conclusions of thisresearcher were supplemented by the commentary by the performer Magdalena Adamek-Kurgan, coming from the first record of Nowowiejski's complete piano works and by her conclusions drawn from the studies on the composer's piano work, as well as the results of Ilona Dulisz’s research on the composer’s juvenile works and the results of the research by the author of the article herself did mainly on the basis of manuscript sources. Comparative literature of a contextu- al nature has also been analysed.

The main part of the article focuses on Nowowiejski’s greatest piano work and is presented in three chapters. They concern architecture, sound language, texture and instrumentation of theConcerto, and focus on the general style and individual characteristics. Analytical considerations are illustrated with musical examples copied from the autograph of the work. The conclusion of the study is as follows: Piano Concerto „Slavic” in d minor op. 60 by Feliks Nowowiejski consti- tutes the synthesis of the composer's creative experiences. It expresses a patriotic attitude of the creator and implements his idea of a Slavic community, conveyed by the language of music.
