Abstract

The article discusses the artistic activity of Salomea Kruszelnicka in the years 1898–1902. It predominantly concerns her performances on the stage of the Warsaw Government Theatres. The account is supplemented with a report on her other activities in that period. The work is based on source material gathered from the press published in Poland, Leipzig (“Signale für die musikalische Welt”) and Saint Petersburg (the Polish-language weekly “Kraj”). The reviews of Kruszelnicka’sperformances constitute a valuable record of the reception of her art and, at the same time, paint an interesting picture of a fragment of Warsaw’s musical culture at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries – a time when traditional views on art clashed with modernist trends.
