Sport i Turystyka permits the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in research and manuscript preparation, provided that its use is transparent and subject to human oversight.
This policy follows the principles and recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) concerning transparency, accountability, authorship, methodological reporting, and confidentiality in the use of AI in scholarly publishing.
This policy applies to generative AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) and other systems capable of generating or substantially modifying text, code, images, or analytical output. Conventional non-generative spelling and grammar checking tools are outside the scope of this policy.
1. General principles
Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Only humans can assume responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, originality, and final approval of scholarly work.
Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted to the Journal, including content generated or modified with the assistance of AI. All AI-assisted output must be critically reviewed and verified by the authors before submission.
Generative AI must not replace the authors' scientific judgment or intellectual contribution.
2. Disclosure of generative AI use
Any use of generative AI in the research or preparation of a manuscript must be disclosed. This includes proofreading or language editing, translation, generation or rewriting of text, summarization, literature-related tasks, generation of code, data analysis or interpretation, and creation or substantive modification of figures or other content.
Every published article must contain a section entitled Artificial Intelligence Use Statement.
If generative AI was not used:
No generative AI was used in the research or preparation of this manuscript.
If generative AI was used, the statement should identify the tool and its purpose. For example:
The authors used [tool] for [purpose]. All AI-assisted content was reviewed and verified by the authors.
Where AI use formed part of the research methodology, additional methodological information must be provided as specified below.
3. Generative AI used as part of the research
When generative AI is used as part of the research process—for example, for literature screening, data extraction or classification, coding, statistical or qualitative analysis, image analysis, or generation of analytical code—its use must also be described in the Methods section. A disclosure statement alone is not sufficient.
The description should provide sufficient information to allow the procedure to be understood, critically evaluated, and, where relevant, reproduced. Depending on the application, this may include the tool and model, version, purpose of use, relevant prompts or instructions, workflow, and procedures for human verification or validation.
4. Use of generative AI by reviewers and editors
Submitted manuscripts and associated materials are confidential. Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts or other confidential submission materials to generative AI systems where confidentiality cannot be assured.
Generative AI may assist but must not replace the independent scientific judgment of reviewers or editors. Reviewers remain responsible for the content of their reviews, and editors remain responsible for editorial decisions. Any substantive use of generative AI in manuscript evaluation or preparation of a review should be disclosed to the Journal.
Failure to disclose generative AI use when required may be addressed in accordance with the Journal's publication ethics procedures.
