Obraz szkolnictwa galicyjskiego w słoweńskim czasopiśmie pedagogicznym „Popotnik” (1880–1914)

The aim of the article was to learn about the Slovenian perspective on Galician education in the context of this nation’s efforts to preserve and nurture its national identity, based on reports from Galicia in the oldest Slovenian educational magazine, Popotnik. Galicia was a subject of constant interest for Popotnik, with 51 reports recorded. Four main issues emerging from these re-
ports were identified: the state of education in Galicia, the situation of teachers, ethnic relations – Polish-Rusyn (Ukrainian) relations, and Polish patriotism. Their analysis shows that the attitude of Slovenians towards Poles was ambivalent – on the one hand, they appreciated the development of education and patriotism, on the other hand, they were critical of illiteracy, neglect of folk teachers, restrictions on the development of Ruthenian-language schools and failure to join the Pan-Slavic movement. The editorial staff saw analogies between the situation of Slovenian education, oppressed by the German administration, and the situation of Ukrainian education in Galicia, but also of Poles in the Prussian partition.
