The “Modlińska” Vistula Flotilla was created in December 1918. It was founded to protect
Polish river transports and patrol the Vistula, Narew and Bug. Until 1920, for almost a year, the
main base of Vistula Flotilla and generally of the Polish Navy, was Modlin. This location was facilitated
by: i.a a short distance from the capital and earlier Russian investments. The port situated
near Toruń was gradually becoming more and more important. There was a fear of an attack of
not yet disarmed Germany. Gradually the main port of flotilla was moved to Toruń. The importance
of both ports has decreased little by the end of military operations. From 1921 the Polish
military authorities focused more on the river military flotilla. The situation was gradually changing
from 1923. In 1925 or 1926, the liquidation of the Vistula Flotilla and the “Toruń” Military
Port was completed. As for in the Modlin military port it ceased to exist in 1928.
