The Beauty and Enthusiasm. Tadeusz Zielinski's (1859 -1944) Reflections on the Role of the Individual in the History of Ancient Greece

Abstract

The author of this article analyses the book Greece Independent by Tadeusz Zielinski and tries
to show how this outstanding scholar and expert on antiquity described the history of ancient
Greece. As far as the scientific material is concerned, one can admire the masterful narration with
which the scholar was able to present the history of the Hellenes, always emphasising what was
most important and characteristic. The point, however, is that he tells the story of Greek history,
from the wanderings of the Dorians to the time of Aristotle, in the context of the great creators
of culture. Although in this respect the book has the merit of a scientific work, it is the descriptions
of great characters and personalities that stand out, as well as the pedagogical and parenetic suggestions
that Zieliński always makes to his readers, whether he is presenting the figure of Homer,
Socrates or other heroes. The author of the article believes that the title of the book deliberately
alludes to the situation of independent Poland, where Zieliński settled permanently in 1922, especially
since the reborn country needed valuable people of the kind Zieliński wrote about.
